Reading · Key and supporting elements
The key element is "what you need most"; the supporting element "assists it from the side"
The key element (用神, yongsin) is the element that balances the eight characters — the energy most helpful to this chart. It is not the same as "the missing element": an element being absent does not mean it is needed, and sometimes the key element is the one that drains an excess. The supporting element (喜神, heesin) is the element that assists the key element from the side — usually the one that produces it, or one that works in the same direction. If the key element is the lead, the supporting element is the understudy. On this site's card the two are labelled Key and Support.
To choose them, first look at which way the day master's strength tips.
Strong and weak day masters
Among the eight characters, weigh the energy that helps you (the same element as the day master and the one that produces it — the Self and Resource groups) against the energy that drains you (what you produce, what you control and what controls you — Output, Wealth and Authority). If the helping side is heavier the day master is strong; if the draining side is heavier it is weak. The earthly character of the birth month — whether the season favours you — counts most.
A strong day master has energy to spare and does best pushing ahead on its own; a weak one goes further by drawing in help from people, learning and environment. Neither is better. What differs is how to use the strength.
Two yardsticks — strength balancing and climate
- Strength balancing (抑扶, eokbu): restore what has tipped. For a strong day master the key element comes from the draining side (Output, Wealth, Authority); for a weak one from the helping side (Resource, Self). This is the basic yardstick.
- Climate (調候, johu): look at the chart's overall weather. Born in midwinter with cold, damp characters, warming the chart is more urgent than balancing strength; born in midsummer and parched, moistening comes first. In those cases climate takes precedence over strength balancing.
This site measures by strength balancing first and lets climate take over when it is urgent, then states which yardstick decided in a single sentence — so you are not left wondering "was that strength or climate?".
How the supporting element is chosen
Once the key element is set, the supporting element follows. The elements form a producing cycle (Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood), so the basic rule is that the element producing the key element becomes the supporting one. If Water is the key element, Metal (which produces Water) supports it; if Wood is the key element, Water supports it. By strength balancing, when Resource is the key element in a weak chart, Self — on the same side — may support it; by climate, when Water is the key element in a hot chart, Metal that draws up water supports it.
The supporting element matters because the key element cannot hold out on its own. Even when the needed energy is present, it is soon used up without something behind it. That is why the chart is checked for a supporting element, and for unions that create one (the innate merit "Union→Support" on this site). In the luck cycles a year of the supporting element is not as strong as a year of the key element, but it smooths the flow.
The three on the other side
| Name | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Harmful element (忌神, gisin) | the energy that is in excess now and causes trouble; it shakes the key element. |
| Hostile element (仇神, gusin) | the energy that helps the harmful one — the counterpart of the supporting element. |
| Neutral element (閑神, hansin) | neither side; neither lucky nor unlucky. |
Key and supporting on one side, harmful and hostile on the other, the neutral one in between — that is how the five elements divide. The harmful element is not something to eliminate; when its energy arrives in a luck cycle or year, it is enough to hold off on big expansions and major decisions.
Bringing the key and supporting elements into daily life
Keeping the key element close is not about carrying a charm; it is about increasing that element's qualities in daily life. The supporting element works the same way, just after the key one. Each element pairs with a colour, a direction, a season and a kind of work.
| Element | Colour | Direction | Season | Work that grows this energy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wood (木) | green, teal | east | spring | education, publishing, planning, clothing, landscaping — things that grow and reach out |
| Fire (火) | red, orange | south | summer | art, broadcasting, promotion, lighting, food and drink, IT — things that reveal and illuminate |
| Earth (土) | yellow, beige | centre | between seasons | property, construction, brokerage, administration, farming — things that settle and mediate |
| Metal (金) | white, silver | west | autumn | finance, law, medicine, machinery, precision work — things that cut and refine |
| Water (水) | black, navy | north | winter | distribution, trade, research, consulting, fisheries — things that flow and seep |
If Wood is your key element and Water the supporting one, keep green and wooden materials close first, then add black and navy and time near water. Small things are enough. A chart is a map, not a fixed ending, and what this site produces is cultural and recreational reading.
